  Dear Dr. Kumar,

The incentives on export of dairy products were withdrawn in April 2008 to discourage export and control price rise of milk and products in the Indian market. These measures have proved quite effective and according to the recent reports on inflation the prices of dairy products have stabilized in the country.

The Indian Dairy Association has been reviewed the situation on availability and prices of milk and products by holding periodic meetings with the dairy producers. Recently we had a meeting of the group on 16th July, 2008 where it was brought out that various dairy plants are holding between 60,000 - 65,000 mt of SMP for the last many months. The position about the availability of milk has been very good, both in the north and the south India. The flush season is round the corner which will further boost the milk production and improve its availability. This requires clearing the old stocks of SMP to create space for the new stocks. There has been a dip in the international price of SMP and negligible quantity of SMP is getting exported.

In view of the position explained above, IDA is of the view that the incentives on export of dairy products need to be restored to promote the export of the old stocks of SMP and casein. A Memorandum prepared on the subject is enclosed for the consideration of Government of India, which I hope will find your favour.

With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,

(N.R. Bhasin)
