Abstract

"Management is an art and a science and it is effective managerial capacity that can convert resources into returns. For increasing and promoting the breeding efficiency of a dairy animal, certain strategies are essential. The first is selection of genetically superior disease -free female animals having yearly calving, a faster growth rate after birth, lower age at first calving and better feed conversion efficiency etc. Timely observance of heat, mating of the females and pregnancy diagnosis are also important factors to achieve high fertility. Further, extensive use of AI technology, which is the most successful method for breed improvement and development, needs to be adopted. Shifting to AI from natural service would help in making rapid strides in breed and productivity improvement. Feeding a balanced and economical ration together with mineral supplements, providing comfortable shelter, implementing suitable remedial measures against managerial problems, following vaccination schedule and record keeping of the above-mentioned activities will certainly maximise the productivity of dairy animals and returns from the dairying business."
